How to Save Money on Your AC Bill this Winter

Finding yourself bracing for high energy costs this winter? If so, the experts at Lee’s Air Conditioning have some great news for you! Saving money on your AC bill during the winter months doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your comfort! Here are a few tips to make sure that both you and your utility bill are comfortable and cozy this winter season!

Seal drafty doors and windows with weatherstripping, caulking, or by purchasing a draft stopper.

Lower your thermostat.

Turning down your thermostat by just one degree can save you 2 to 5 percent per degree! When you’re at home, lower your thermostat to a temperature that is comfortable for you and throw on a sweatshirt or cover up with a blanket. You can also save up to 15% by lowering your thermostat by 10 degrees while everyone is asleep or if no one is at the house!

Buy a humidifier for your home to use during the winter months.

The more moisture that is within the air in your home, the better it can hold heat. Therefore, a humidifier can make your house feel warmer without even adjusting the thermostat.

Remove any window air conditioning units.

Keeping your window AC units in over the winter is not only bad for the air conditioner, but it can also create unnecessary drafts that can enter your house and allow warmer air to escape, which can cause your thermostat to overwork itself.

Don’t block your heating vents.

Blocking your heating vents can prevent the warm air from reaching and circulating throughout a room or throughout your home. Be sure that all drapes and curtains are not blocking your vents. Having an object block your vents is not only affecting the efficiency of your system but is also creating a fire hazard within your home!

Contact an HVAC contractor each year before the cold weather arrives.

This ensures that your system is working efficiently and receive an inspection and tune-up! If the technician replaces your filters, this will allow your system’s efficiency to begin functioning better, as well as save you money. In addition to the inspection and tune-up, he will also run a series of checks and tests to ensure that your furnace is fully prepared and equipped to endure the winter months!

Utilize the sun!

Open window coverings during the day to allow your home to be naturally heated by the sunlight. Close the window coverings when the sun begins to set in order to trap the warm heat within your home and reduce the chill that is given off by the windows at night.

Turn your ceiling fans on with the blades rotating clockwise.

Being that warm air rises, it will collect at the ceiling. By having your fan turn in a clockwise direction, it will push the warm air back down and throughout the room.

Close the chimney.

As mentioned before, warm air rises. This allows a large amount of warm air to escape through the roof of your home. Leaving your chimney damper open when there is no fire going is similar to leaving a window open within your home, allowing warm air to escape and cold air to enter.

Install a programmable thermostat that will allow you to automatically use less heat whenever people within your home are asleep or when everyone is away from the household.
