Spring Cleaning Checklist for your HVAC System

Spring cleaning: it’s on almost everyone’s list of things to do when the winter temperatures start to disappear to prepare for the sunny and 75-degree weather that’s coming! Whether it’s the house, the yard, the closet, or the office, spring cleaning is a good idea for almost anyone.

However, it’s important to not forget to add your HVAC system to your cleaning list! A dirty or inefficient HVAC system can lead to poor air quality, an overworked system, and additional problems. We’ve created own our spring cleaning checklist that can be used when evaluating the condition of your system!

Tasks For You!

1.Change air filters

Before you turn on your AC, be sure to change out the filters in your system. Not only does this increase the quality of air that is flowing through your system, it can also preserve the lifespan of your HVAC system. Follow the instructions provided in your owner’s manual or on the filter packaging. It is important to make sure that the air filter is the right size and that it is inserted properly. We recommend changing your air filters every three months. If you begin to notice dust or mold on your air filter, it is more than likely time to switch them out.

2. Clear the Condenser/Compressor

Check the area around your condenser or compressor. If you covered your system during the winter or a storm, be sure to remove the cover. Weeds, debris, or other obstructions may have grown around or may be blocking this area so be sure to remove any item that may be interfering with the system. Look inside the metal grille and remove any leaves, weeds, etc. that may be inside the grille.

3. Check Ductwork Insulation

Examine all of the insulation around your system’s ductwork and make sure that it is still in good condition. Replace the ductwork insulation if necessary.

4. Seal Up Your Windows

Cracks and gaps from your windows will allow the cooler air to exit the room while still allowing the warmer air from outside to enter your home. This will not only give you undesirable temperatures throughout your home, it will also increase your utility bills and cause your system to potentially overwork itself over time.

5. Test Your Unit!

Run your unit for a few hours at the temperature that you would usually run it during the summer months. Listen for any strange noises coming from your system. If you hear something unusual or notice some rooms more drafty than others, it may be time for an annual tune-up!

Tasks for your Technician!

1.Inspect electrical components.

The technician will check the moving parts inside your system. He will clean, tighten, and repair any parts that are in need of repair to make sure your system is working efficiently for the upcoming summer months.

2. Check the refrigerant level

Another part of your system that the technician may examine is the refrigerant level. If he notices that it is low, or needs to be emptied and refilled, the tech will adjust the refrigerant level accordingly.

3. Test the thermostat

The technician will also try out your thermostat to make sure that the settings are still properly working. If necessary, he will calibrate your thermostat!
