It is getting to be that time of year when home heating is a necessity. How is your system working? You may have noticed some issues since you last used it. Some things are normal when you first start up a system, and there are others that are signs that you need to get your home heating system checked out.
Leaks
If you have a furnace, the main thing to be concerned about is a gas leak, especially since there is an open flame in the vicinity. Fortunately, it is quite easy to detect leaks. Most everyone has gotten a whiff of the distinctive “rotten egg” odor of a gas leak. That smell does not come from the gas, since both natural gas and propane are odorless in their natural state. An additive is mixed with the gas in order to make it noticeable if there is a leak. If you ever have this smell, you should extinguish all open flames, open your windows, and call your gas provider immediately. When turning on your furnace for the first time you may detect some slight burning odor. This is generally just the dust burning out of the chamber, and it should go away quickly.
Rust
Occasionally, we see rust around furnaces. This is particularly true with older units. The by-products of gas combustion are water and carbon dioxide, and these can cause rust to form over time. The rust can impede the burners if there is enough to cause incomplete burning. Incomplete burning can lead to inefficient gas usage and an even more serious condition such as the production of carbon monoxide. Therefore, it is a good idea to call a service tech to have your home heating system checked out if you see rust.
Noise
There should be very little noise associated with a furnace, especially modern ones. You may hear the burners fire up if you are very close but not much more than that. Much louder noises may indicate an issue with the fan, especially grinding or squealing sounds. This is true for both furnaces and air handlers if you are using a heat pump. If you hear any unusual sounds, you should turn your system off immediately and call your local contractor in Youngsville LA.
Flame
If you are able to see the flame, notice its appearance. It should be small, blue, sharp and stable; this indicates a clean burning system. A yellow flame that is wavering is a sign that your system is dirty and needs to be cleaned.
